It happens to the best of us. Maybe it’s even happening to me right now! We want to keep our blog active, posting as much as possible to show our expertise in the industry. But sometimes…you just come up blank. Whether it’s lack of inspiration, writer’s block or your kid kept you up all night. Sometimes you need a little help.
For times like these, when you’re struggling to come up with a relevant blog idea that will inspire, educate or entertain readers, here are a few tips:
Check the Stats - Let your website statistics guide you! One sure-fire way to figure out what your readers want to hear about is to review what they’ve read the most. Log into the analytics area of your website and review the most popular blogs. I bet you’ll find some trends. We checked ours recently and found that the top two blogs were Facebook-related (Goodbye, Facebook Ratings and A Great Facebook Post). We got it! You guys want Facebook tips.
Think About Client Pain Points - One of the best content sources can be your own clients or customers. Think about what they’ve recently struggled with. I bet they’re not the only ones facing this issue. Recently, one of our clients was having trouble getting RSVPs for their Facebook Event. We helped them create a Facebook advertising strategy, along with some email marketing touch points in order to ramp up visibility for the Facebook event. We’ve now logged ‘Facebook Event Promotional Tips’ as a potential blog topic for an upcoming installment.
Access a Guest Blogger - Blogging doesn’t have to fall solely on your shoulders, even if you’re a one-person business. Make a list of colleagues, partners or other business owners who would be able to educate your audience. Then reach out with the offer! Let them know that they’ll be able to promote themselves and their businesses through the bio portion of the blog, and links to their website and/or social media pages. Or you could even offer to swap guest blogs. Payment is not required here as there are tons of benefits to the guest blogger as well.
Check Trending Industry News - As an expert in your industry, one of your jobs is to keep up with industry news and updates. An extension of this role is to keep your audience updated and informed. Sometimes, a quick re-tweet of an industry article is a good way to let followers know, “You should read this!” But a more insightful strategy is to prepare a thought leadership blog where you offer your opinion and insight on the news. What’s nice about this type of blog is that it can be short, just a couple of paragraphs or so. Let the readers know what they should focus on within the news update, what you agreed with or didn’t, then link them directly over to the article.
A Simple How-To Goes a Long Way - As I go through my work day, I’m performing some tasks that are complex and extremely thought-provoking, such as developing a new client’s social media strategy. While other tasks are more repetitive, something I’ve done thousands of times, like scheduling client social media posts for the following week. While scheduling posts may feel extremely simple to me, others may be figuring it out for the first time, and struggling. That’s where I can help! I can take a step back and create a basic how-to guide on scheduling posts on social. Take a moment to think about your daily tasks. Is there anything you consider to be simple, that others may be struggling with? There’s your how-to blog topic.
