Social Bakers studied three months’ worth of Facebook content from major brands and found that top brands average one Facebook post per day. The same source found that to get top engagement on Twitter, the magic number is three Tweets per day. Add in Google+, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Instagram and YouTube...that's a ton of posts!
A major challenge we've seen for business owners is finding fresh social media content to post on a daily basis. To help with this plight, we decided to put together a list of 13 post ideas (with examples) that you can personalize and use right away!
1. Inspirational Quotes
Inspirational quotes are often the most shared and engaged with type of posts. For our clients, we like to share about one inspirational quote per week. Find quotes that are sitting on top of photos (called memes). These are more likely to be shared. Better yet, create your own! Buffer offers a great tool for placing text on top of graphics, called Pablo. Here are a couple great examples. Just right-click, save and use them today!
2. Photos of your Staff
Social media is a perfect venue to bring personalization to your brand. People don't prefer to connect with brands on social media. They prefer to connect with people. Showing your staff brings that personalization to the brand that can connect your audience and improve brand awareness. Here are some of our clients' examples. Pick up your phone and start snapping! Remember, your audience would rather see relatable, casual photos than staged, professional ones.
3. Throwback Thursday Graphics
Everyone enjoys a good throwback. Dig into those old company photos and find some gems to share on Thursdays. When you share, be sure to use the hashtag #ThrowbackThursday and/or #TBT. One idea that we enjoy is to share baby photos of staff. Even better, start a contest for your audience to match baby photos with your staff's recent head shots. Here are some fun examples!
4. Introduction Videos
These days, videos are where it's at. They bring in the most engagement over all other post types. Don't feel like you need to invest thousands of dollars into a professional video. More and more, companies are firing up their iPhone or GoPro and filming short, casual videos to reflect their brand personality. One easy video idea that we like is to film short intros of each of your staff members. This will improve your brand visibility and help to personalize your brand.
5. Hosted Events
If you happen to host events, whether in-person or online, be sure to talk about your events on social media. Market the events before the date in order to bump up attendance. During the event, bring your audience behind the scenes with engaging photos and videos. After the event, follow up with posts like testimonials, event video clips, photos and presentation slides. Also be sure to use event hashtags in your posts in order to catalog the content.
6. Industry Events
Each industry has a set of important conferences and events to learn about the latest industry updates and trends. Whether or not your company attends these events, it is helpful to your audience if you talk about them. These types of posts will place you as an industry resource who your audience can go to for everything industry-related. We like to share event summaries after the events to update those who were unable to attend.
7. Simple Tips & Tricks

As business owners, we have less time than ever to capture our audience's attention. For this reason, simple tips and tricks are super effective on social media. Whatever your product or service may be, you are the expert and should be sharing your expertise with your audience.
8. Staff & Client Birthdays
People love a good shout-out, especially on their birthday! If your staff and clients are comfortable with it, post a quick birthday greeting and let them know why they're appreciated. This is another way to give your social media profiles a personalized feel.
9. Industry News & Trends
It's important to round out your content mix with topics not related to your business. In fact, many experts say that only 20% of your content should talk about your business, while the other 80% should come from other sources. Sharing industry news and trends is a great way to diversify your content and also place your business as an industry expert.
10. Giveaways & Contests
Contests and giveaways are great ways to grow your fan base. They don't have to include expensive gifts, and should be easy to enter. A contest presents an opportunity for your audience to get personal. It allows you to get to know them even better, so that you can continue to present them with content that they actually WANT to see. Lastly, contests give you an outlet to recognize and reward your loyal customers. Aside from the new customers a contest will bring in, your current customers want to feel appreciated too.
11. Compliment Your Clients
Giving your client's a shout-out is a great way to show appreciation while also expanding the reach of your posts. It's even likely that your client will re-share the post. We like to share interesting client news and press. See a couple great examples below.
Having trouble getting engagement on your posts? Well, just ask for it! Asking for a response in a clear and direct way often results in better engagement than posts without the ask. One simple and fun idea is to use fill-in-the-blanks. The phrases you use can be related to your product or service, for example: My favorite menu item is _________. Another idea is to use phrases that are fun and unrelated to your business. For example: My Valentine is _________. This is one you can have fun with!
Statistics do very well on social media, especially on Twitter. Spend some time finding up-to-date, industry-related statistics and make a list. Post one stat per week to help round out your content mix.
