If your business isn't active on Google+, you're really missing out on one of the best tools available to increase your online brand visibility. In our experience, content posted to your Google+ page will come up higher in searches than content posted on your other social pages. Here are 6 simple steps to start capitalizing on the benefits of Google+ involvement right away.
1. Create your Page.
Visit 'Create a Page' on Google+. Follow the simple steps to set up your page.
2. Brand your Page.
Customize your public profile by uploading a profile photo, cover photo, contact info, business description, etc... The goal here is to make your profile as attractive as possible by filling in all available fields.
3. Verify your Page.
To make sure the basic information you submit to Google is accurate, they ask you to verify it. This process helps them give the best possible information to your customers on Google.
Most business owners verify by postcard. If you’re verifying a business that’s already on Google, you may also be able to verify by phone. And if you’ve verified your business’s website with Webmaster Tools, you may also be eligible for instant verification.
If you need to verify by postcard, on the postcard request screen, make sure your address is displayed accurately. You can also add an Optional contact name to help your postcard reach you. Then click 'Send postcard.' When you receive your postcard (which can take a week or two), enter your verification code into your dashboard.
If you have any trouble, or you don't receive the postcard in the mail, simply contact Google. We've done this and they were able to manually verify the page over the phone.
4. Create a Vanity URL
Google will give you a profile URL that consists of about one thousand random characters. Not really, but it's impossible for people to remember this random collection of numbers. To create a personalized URL for your Google+ page, get to your profile first. Click on the 'About' tab and under 'Contact Information,' you'll see 'Google+ URL'. Click 'Get URL' and you'll see some custom URL's that you can choose from.
Once your URL has been approved, you cannot request to change it. When you've decided what will be best, click 'Confirm choice.'
5. Start Follow other Google+ Profiles
Use the search bar at the top to find current customers, partners, industry influencers and media. Visit their Google+ profiles and follow them. This will get you on their radar and hopefully land you a follow-back.
6. Don't Forget to Post
Most importantly, post content regularly and use hash tags that are relevant to your services, industry and to the content you're posting. Google+ is obviously a Google-owned product, so you will find that your Google+ content falls above other social content within Google searches. Posting regularly will help customers find your content, and ultimately, your business.
